Time marches on, but as a youngster, rhythmic movements were a part of life when music was available. My Parents were astute in recognizing the interest in dancing. Consequently, I was privileged to receive private tap, ballet, baton and acrobatic lessons from Jack Steiffer.
Friends of my parents had their daughter attend classes at Kelley Studio. To facilitate car pooling, as neither family resided in Johnstown. I was then enrolled in a class which became boring as I was further advanced than my friend's child. So that didn't interest me any longer.
My father was president of the local PNA, so we went there as families gathered for afternoon dances by local bands. Socialization was great as parents mingled and took youngsters to the dance floor. This was an event I looked forward to because dancing with others was easy.
Perhaps the early dance training benefited my high school social life. Our Dairy Dell and it's jukebox had the latest hit songs and, although we really didn't Tango, my partner and I had the honor of everyone else clearing the floor for our rendition to "Blue Tango."
Saxophone and clarinet were my other musical endeavors while achieving solo and first chair in band, orchestra and pep and jazz band at school. I had the privilege to dance to live bands such as Ray Anthony, the Dorsey brothers, drum solos by Buddy Rich, Harry James and other at the Sunset and Oriental Ballrooms. What wonderful memories to have danced to the end of their performances.
All of the music and dancing came to a brief halt when marriage, family and job were foremost importance. However, every opportunity to go dancing was taken. It was rewarding to teach and dance with my daughters.
Dancing has and always will be important in my life. the rhythmic movmentes are great exercise, relaxing and put one in a different mode. It doesn't always have to be a format from instruction, but with certain dancing partners, a freedom of expression to the particular rhythm.
Unfortunately, we are limited in our area as to the quality and types of music. Choices of establishments are limited and bands become boring with repetitious same songs. Dancing is unique in manner of expression exercise, relaxation and sensuality. It has an advantage where one can meet people from all walks of life with a common love of music and dancing.
I hope to pursue my interest in Latin music because of the rhythm and forum. If my essay should be chosen a winner, I would be happy with any mode of dance instruction because I love to dance.
Fortunately, my friend and dancing partner has a feel for music and rhythm which is compatible with mine. We have fun and think we radiate joy to others, judging by compliments we have received. It enables us to smile in spite of adversities, and if we are not talented, we enjoy dancing with a passion.
Respectfully Submitted,
Dorothy Yauneridge.
